Seventeen-year-old Grace grows up knowing she’s different, but she always attributed it to a mother who didn’t want her, a father who abandoned her, and a curse that sets her apart. Despite those struggles, her grandfather remained her rock and confidant. Her life
irrevocably shatters the day her grandfather dies.
The day of his funeral sets off a chain of events, making Grace question everything she’s ever known to be true, and as a result, who she can truly trust. She inherits his house, part of his money, his Guardian and something that ties them together.
Just before Grace’s 18th birthday, she is thrust into a world she couldn’t fathom existed and does everything she can to thwart the destiny suddenly forced upon her. She’s been chosen for greatness, but at what cost? With eyes now open, she must choose to either be
Chosen, or watch those around her suffer the consequences.
Torn between the man who’s come to protect her and the one sent to destroy her, she
teeters on the edge of decision, trying to come to grips with who she is, what she wants
and what all of that means for her, those she loves and the rest of mankind.
Our thoughts:
Poor Grace....her life is all kinds of upside down after her grandfather Christophe dies.
She loses him and gains a
Guardian (Quentin), and a secret box. A box that others are searching for and willing to hurt Grace in order to get it.

This is my first book that I read by Miss Raines and it kept me intrigued throughout the whole book. I could easily picture the adventure in my mind and it was great! I WILL be adding the rest of the series to my TBR. 4 stars

Grace is simply devastated after the loss of her beloved grandfather. He was the only person who truly loved her, accepted her, and showed her that he cared. He was the only person that made her feel like she mattered. Without him, Grace is simply lost.
Soon after a lawyer shows up with a sealed letter from her grandfather. Now life as she knew it will never be the same. Not only does she have a secret, but it seems everyone around her has their own secrets. How can she grieve for the man that was her everything, prepare for the fight to stay alive, and finish high school....all at one time????
This is one of those books that makes that emotional connection right from the first page. Immediately the reader sympathises with Grace. Her sense of grief is overwhelming. From there I was a total goner. From plot twists and turns, near death experiences and a serious love quadralateral, it is the book the just doesn't stop. The story wasn't all original, but the author's take on it was. The characters are all well developed, and have just enough involvement to keep it interesting without being jumbled.
I love how Grace begins to come into her own strength throughout this story. She doesn't have insta- love, or insta-kick butt, but develops it as the story flows. Very well done!!!
I was ready for more of the story as soon as the book ended. It wasn't a cliffy ending, but more of a where does she go from here. I liked that. It almost felt as if the author was purposefully easing me into book two!! Overall, a definite read for ages 16+, there is a few heavy topics so I say mature YA. Great introduction to a new series. 5 stars
