Talented by Sophie Davis

When Talia Lyons was just a child, her parents were murdered before her eyes. Offered a choice between accepting their fate and exacting revenge, Talia trains to become one of the country’s deadliest assassins in order to kill the man responsible for their deaths: Ian Crane. Luckily, Talia was born with a gift- the ability to read and influence the minds of others. At sixteen, Talia is poised to graduate from the McDonough School for the Talented, where she learned to control her abilities. Now there is only one obstacle standing between her and the retribution she craves... Talia herself.

Her greatest asset may also be her undoing; while a formidable weapon in the field, Talia’s talents prevent her from both shutting off the mental connection she shares with her questionable boyfriend and blocking out the thoughts of a beguiling fellow recruit. But Talia can’t afford to have the feelings and distractions of a normal teenage girl, when her life is far from normal.

She must regain the single-minded determination that has brought her this far, or it may cost Talia her life when she finally faces Crane. And even after being molded in to a weapon of war, she’ll still have to find the strength it takes to pull the trigger.

If James Bond and Sookie Stackhouse had a love child with a yearning for vengeance, her story would be TALENTED: an adventure about powerful teenagers who aren’t afraid to embrace their fears and fight for what they believe in.

Our Thoughts:

Natalia had had one horrible experience after another in het short life. First, she had to witness the brutal murder of her mother and father. Having no close family, she chose to move in with the leader of TOXIC. Mac and Gretchen ha e seen to it that she has had the best of everything all these years. They took her in and treated her just like the daughter she never had. Talia should have been more than happy, but instead her hate only grew. Now she is intent on hunting the man behind the attack and making him pay for het parents murder.%
While hee love life remains beyond complicated, she begins her apprentice year to become the most deadly of her kind-- a TOXIC hunter. She must learn how to balance the strain of work and her fragile homelife . All while keeping herself and her partner's alive
I fell in love with Talia. In the tradition of kick butt females like Laura Croft from Tomb Raider, she brings that in your face butt kicking mentality and power, while also being indecisive and a little bit socially awkward. It is really a great story to watch unfold. There is a romantic sort of element. I have to say the I seriously didn't like Donovan the whole book. I wanted to reach through the pages and smack him a few good times.
The characterization was very well done. The personalities are strong and even the dialogue fits. The plot is balanced between coming of age/action and adventure/ romance. It is a nice blend that keeps the reader engaged from the very beginning. It is a fast paced read, and I liked the flow. It was nice to see that even though Talia had all this power, she wasn't all hard and non-feeling. After a series of not so goof books o have picked up this one is a gem !!!
I do list this as a recommended read and one that will really entertain. This is the first book in her series, so I anticipate great things from the future novels. Editing was well done as well. Go out and grab this one, well worth the time!!! 5 stars

Holy smokes Batman! When I started reading Talented, I was sucked in. Revenge always sits well with me so this was an incredible read to review.

Talia is a girl on a mission: to become a Hunter and get revenge for her murdered parents. She's trained hard for the better part of her teenage life and has loved hard in the process. She makes new friends and loves being a pledge. But when feelings for another catch her off guard, truths and lies are discovered and her whole world gets rocked. When faced with her solo mission, will Talia follow through with exacting revenge or will she falter and fail?

Wow...just wow! I'm starting to become a huge fan of dystopian and I am ├╝ber glad I was given the chance to read Talented. Sophie has created such an addicting series and leaves you craving more. I love Erik! He is such a great guy despite being a ladies man. I don't want to give too much away but dang...it's kinda hard not too :) I can not wait to read Caged, book 2 in the Talented Saga! 5 stars

Our thoughts:

Packed full of explosive action, love and loss, Crimson Flames was a good read. Ashley did an outstanding job on creating amazing scenes and likable and dis-likeable characters. Although some parts of the story seemed a little slow paced for me, I really enjoyed reading and following Abby on this awesome thrill ride! I look forward to reading more from this talented writer.
~Crystal

Abby has had a wild ride ever since being turned against her will into a vampire. Now with Bronx dead and the High Council tracking her every move, she must race to fulfill her own destiny and keep.herself alive.

Change happens whether you want it to or not, whether you’re ready for it or not...
This novel is absolutely amazing. Long gone is scared Anna, who is unsure and scared of her own shadow. Now Abby is back and she is ready to kick some serious butt. This book is full of depth and a deep emotional plot blended with high energy action. It is like taking a journey with Abby on the way to finding herself. I was absolutely all in right from the beginning.
All of the characters are amazing. Some I love, others I love to hate. They are all well developed, with depth and their own story. Each are explained in great detail but not so much as to glob up the story or inhibit the progress. Abby truly has a fire within her now and that was amazing to read.
I loved book one, bit this one is over any expectation I had. It is a thrill ride. Editing is superb and the flow is absolutely natural. I hate that this is the end. I want more.
This is such an amazing story I would love to see story continue. Go out and grab this one, it is more than worth it. It truly makes you fall in love with vampires that don't sparkle in the sun all over again. I won't say this is a recommended read, it is a read it would be a crime to miss. I will say due to a few sexual situations and dialogue I will say the age is 16+ for this one.....Happy reading! 5 stars

Zombie Clueless

When I first wrote Zombified I had watched several Zombie movies. I really enjoyed
Zombieland, Shawn of the Dead, and Night of the Living Dead {the classic} a lot. I hadn’t
however heard of Warm Bodies, The Walking Dead, and all of the other Zombie things that
have come out of the woodwork since the story of Cassie and her adventure came into my
head. I love that Zombie culture is so big, but it of course made me think that my story was
just going to be one in a sea of Zombie tales and no one would want it. I was thrilled beyond
words when it was signed with GMTA and happy to get my tale out there, but it needed
some work.

Initial beta reads were not that great, some people thought it lacked some meat, or some
parts didn’t flow well. I was still really proud of my story and knew I could only make it
better. I also had people who read it and loved it just the way it was, and those people
couldn’t understand why I pulled it for rewrites and another good deep editing. I love those
people and I am glad they loved my book. The new version isn’t really all that different it
just flows better, has some added scenes, and already has the hearts of some of my favorite
indie authors like Alexia Purdy and Heather Powell. I am excited for the release of the 15 th,
and since my story is still the same just better I know people are going to enjoy it just as
much as before. At least, I hope they do.

Pulse Promo Blitz

Esa is a street girl living in a post apocalyptic world. A world that left her with nothing except the physical and mental scars that drive her to the person she is becoming. Whilst searching for shelter, she encounters a creature known as a spinner who pulls her onto a perilous path. Now with a horde of goblins close on their heels, they must work together and enter the magical realm in search of answers. Why can she sense magic and why is a powerful sorcerer determined to end her life? This is an exciting story of power, friendship and secrets. Secrets that threaten to rip Esa’s world apart. Pulse is aimed towards the young adult market. For those seeking adventure and magic with a futuristic edge. Most fantasy novels tend to hide the magical worlds or show as historic here I have tried to blend the worlds together.

“Oh, girlie, you really shouldn’t have said that.” His beady red eyes greedily took in the girl
and seeing no real threat he lunged forward. His sword scraped the wall where moments
earlier Esa had stood. Pushing from the wall, she twisted to the side and drove her dagger
deep into the goblin’s extended arm. A yowl filled the room and he swung his sword blindly
in her direction. In one fluid movement she dropped to the floor and kicked her leg out.
Boot hit shin and he fell to the floor grabbing his leg.
“No one calls me girlie.” Standing over him she turned the dagger around in her hand,
bringing the hilt down on the base of his skull. “Night, night.” Wiping the blood from her
blade on her jeans, she turned her attention to Rootu.

A Minor Magic....interview

Over the course of a single night, mystical fires tore through the sky and reduced most of Earth to ash. Ten years later magical fire burns again, but this time it's in the hands of a young girl named Skylar. Exiled from her adoptive home, Skylar must now struggle through ruined lands and religious zealots who believe she's an agent of the Devil. An even greater threat exists in the form of shadowy sorcerers from another world who covet her blood. Along her journey, she meets a motley band of outcasts who not only know the secret of what happened to Earth, but also of Skylar's true origin. Will Skylar be able to accept this fantastical truth? But more importantly, can her powers and raging heart be tamed in time to stop those who once burned the world and now seek total domination?

Amazon

Hey all, I got to interview Justin R. Macumber!!!! So excited for you all to see what he had to say.

1. Tell me about Skylar, where did she come from?
In my head, or in the story? I'll tackle both. So far as inspiration goes, my niece Aleena -- who is now 13 -- is the reason I wrote A MINOR MAGIC. I wanted her to have a hero that wasn't defined by a man or a romantic relationship, who didn't need saving or protecting. I felt like a lot of the books my niece was reading had their female characters that weren't as strong as they could be, who were swept up in events and just sort of carried along. So, to give her a hero that fit my idea of who she should look up to, I created Skylar, a girl with magical powers and a great destiny to work hard toward. She's a little bit Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a little Arya from Game of Thrones, and a little bit Princess Leia from Star Wars, none of whom are passive wallflowers looking for a boy to define them.
As far as the story goes, Skylar is a young girl who's grown up nearly her whole life in a world burnt to ash by magic. Her father is long dead, her mother died after trying to keep her safe in the wasteland that is America, and in the beginning of the book her home with an elderly couple is threatened when magic springs from her hands unexpectedly. She's only 15, and now she has to question everything she's ever known, or thought she knew. Not just about the world, but about herself. A MINOR MAGIC is about her journey to discover what those answers are.

2. What authors inspire you?
I'm inspired as much by authors as I am by writers of movies, television, video games, and comic books. I draw inspiration from all sources. Stephen King is without doubt my greatest author hero. If I can even come close to achieving what he has in storytelling, I'll die a happy man. Robert R. McCammon is another writer whom I greatly admire. His novel SWAN SONG was huge for me. I mentioned Willow before, so you know I have to bring up Joss Whedon. I think he's amazing, and I credit him with proving that there was an audience for smart, strong female characters in today's world. He should get more credit than he does, though, for his work on the comic books "Astonishing X-Men" and "Runaways."

3. Do you have a playlist you listen to when you write?
I do, though it changes depending on what I'm writing. I use music as a mood setter, so if I'm going to write something dark, I'll play a score from a horror film such as "The Decent," or horror games like "Silent Hill" and "Heavy Rain." If I want something to bump up the adrenaline, I'll listen to the scores for "Conan" and "Gladiator," or the orchestral group known as Two Steps From Hell. And, if I need something emotional for those touching scenes, I love listening to a composer named Kerry Muzzey. His music for the short film "Hole In The Paper Sky" is heartbreaking. For A MINOR MAGIC I also played the heck out of the music for "Stardust" and "Pan's Labyrinth."

4. Who designed your cover?
Crescent Moon Press designed it in-house. I'm not sure who the specific artist was.

5. What's next for you?
Right now I'm editing two manuscripts. One is a horror novel entitled STILL WATER, and the other is a follow-up to A MINOR MAGIC called A BROKEN MAGIC. I also have two short stories coming up for two different anthologies. I'll let people know more about those at my website as information comes available.

Thanks for chatting Justin!!!

Shattered Grace Reviews

Seventeen-year-old Grace grows up knowing she’s different, but she always attributed it to a mother who didn’t want her, a father who abandoned her, and a curse that sets her apart. Despite those struggles, her grandfather remained her rock and confidant. Her life
irrevocably shatters the day her grandfather dies.

The day of his funeral sets off a chain of events, making Grace question everything she’s ever known to be true, and as a result, who she can truly trust. She inherits his house, part of his money, his Guardian and something that ties them together.

Just before Grace’s 18th birthday, she is thrust into a world she couldn’t fathom existed and does everything she can to thwart the destiny suddenly forced upon her. She’s been chosen for greatness, but at what cost? With eyes now open, she must choose to either be
Chosen, or watch those around her suffer the consequences.

Torn between the man who’s come to protect her and the one sent to destroy her, she
teeters on the edge of decision, trying to come to grips with who she is, what she wants
and what all of that means for her, those she loves and the rest of mankind.

Our thoughts:

Poor Grace....her life is all kinds of upside down after her grandfather Christophe dies.
She loses him and gains a
Guardian (Quentin), and a secret box. A box that others are searching for and willing to hurt Grace in order to get it.
This is my first book that I read by Miss Raines and it kept me intrigued throughout the whole book. I could easily picture the adventure in my mind and it was great! I WILL be adding the rest of the series to my TBR. 4 stars
~Jaime

Grace is simply devastated after the loss of her beloved grandfather. He was the only person who truly loved her, accepted her, and showed her that he cared. He was the only person that made her feel like she mattered. Without him, Grace is simply lost.
Soon after a lawyer shows up with a sealed letter from her grandfather. Now life as she knew it will never be the same. Not only does she have a secret, but it seems everyone around her has their own secrets. How can she grieve for the man that was her everything, prepare for the fight to stay alive, and finish high school....all at one time????
This is one of those books that makes that emotional connection right from the first page. Immediately the reader sympathises with Grace. Her sense of grief is overwhelming. From there I was a total goner. From plot twists and turns, near death experiences and a serious love quadralateral, it is the book the just doesn't stop. The story wasn't all original, but the author's take on it was. The characters are all well developed, and have just enough involvement to keep it interesting without being jumbled.
I love how Grace begins to come into her own strength throughout this story. She doesn't have insta- love, or insta-kick butt, but develops it as the story flows. Very well done!!!
I was ready for more of the story as soon as the book ended. It wasn't a cliffy ending, but more of a where does she go from here. I liked that. It almost felt as if the author was purposefully easing me into book two!! Overall, a definite read for ages 16+, there is a few heavy topics so I say mature YA. Great introduction to a new series. 5 stars
~Michelle

Just when I thought I would get away without shedding a tear...the end comes!

Shattered Grace is full of emotions that will make you angry, sad, happy and take a breath when you didn't realize you were holding it.

When her beloved Grandfather passes away, Grace is left with no one. Yes she has family, but they don't understand her the way he did. Allthey care about is thier inheritance.
When she meets her Grandfather's attorney and trusted friend, she can't help but feel connected to him. Thus begins the craziness that becomes known as her normal, everyday life. I would say more but I don't want to spoil it for you readers out there! =)

K. Anne Raines did such an excellent job on writing this awesome beginning to an epic adventure! The twists and turns all throughout the story keeps you entertained and on your toes. I can't wait for book 2 to come out! 5 stars
~Crystal

I have to say, when I finished this book, my first thought was…I need the next book!
The characters were well developed. You were able to relate quickly to the main characters. You can feel what they feel and enjoy an escape to a world that the author created. By the end of the book, you understood each character and their purpose as well as their backstory without flashbacks.
The story line had many ins and outs that made you feel as if there was so much more to come. The ending gave you satisfaction, but you knew there was more to this story. You feel hooked quickly and the intricacies of the sub plots had you looking forward to every word. Some books you wait for the next paragraph, or chapter, but this one had me almost angry when I had to put it down. I really felt what the characters felt.
Any book that makes me bite my nails in anticipation gets 5 stars from me. And this book is one of them.
~Carrie

Excerpt:
“It wasn’t your fault,” Quentin said softly as he came up behind her, touching her briefly
on the shoulder before lowering himself to sit on the edge of the coffee table. He leaned
toward her, resting his elbows on his knees as he stared into her eyes, his expression
conveying his compassion.
Grace raised her tear-filled eyes. “It wouldn’t have happened if I wasn’t in the car with
them.” Tears spilled over her lower lids, blurring her view of Emily’s picture glowing
from the cell phone she still gripped.
“Look at me.” Quentin lifted her face with a gentle finger. “It was my fault. It’s my job to
keep you safe and I failed.”
She heard every word Quentin spoke, but couldn’t cling to them like he intended. Every
one of her friends could have died—because of her, not him. Visions of caskets and
grieving families had her pulse quickening. Worry festered in the center of her chest—
circling and tearing at her until what rose forth was anger. With every beat of her heart,
the anger pulsed stronger. No. In her head, she said it again. No. The word ricocheted like
a war cry through her cerebral cortex until it owned her, heart and soul. Energy channeled
through every inch of her body. A shiver chased behind it. Those she cared for and loved
would not pay for what she was.
In that instant, Grace felt the power of her choice thunder through her like an electrical
current. Just like Seth in the movie, she chose to be what she was meant to be, and not to
shed what she originally thought was a burden. Newly determined, she leveled her gaze
with Quentin’s.
“What do I need to do to make sure they never hurt anyone I love again?”

Quentin gazed back at her, his features rearranging themselves into an expression flat and
cold—deadly. “You train and you fight back. You let me do my job. And we don’t let
them win. Ever.”
Resolve steeled her voice. “We won’t.”

she gets instead is an eye-full of the man himself, half-naked and more than she’d ever
dreamed he could be in all her teenage fantasies.

Drex has been fantasizing about Chris forever, and now that she’s a grown woman, he

He never dreamed sex could be like this, with Chris in his room, tied to a bed, asking him

But when things turn ugly, it becomes clear that someone wants the nosey reporter dead.

I bet she didn’t tell you that he doesn’t even know that I live in the same city as
he does. Of course she didn’t, because she never asked me about Peter when I
texted her two weeks ago.

11:38pm:
I’m curious, Jake. How did Peter come up in your conversation with Melissa?
Were you asking, or did she volunteer. Because if you were asking, then I have
to wonder why you never asked *me*.

11:40pm:
Because if you had asked me, this is what I would have told you:

11:43pm:

Peter and I met in high school. He was the greatest guy I’d ever met. Smart,
handsome, extremely charming. He was a year younger than me and all of the
girls in the school wanted to be with him. So to have him to myself, to have “won”
him, I felt pretty special.

11:45pm:
Anyway, Peter and I were together eight years. We tolerated each other through
my last year in high school and my four years of college. By the time I finished
my CPA, he hit me five times. He threatened to kill me six *thousand* times. I
guess it depends on who you ask, but that is either five times too many, or six
thousand times too many, but for me it was both.

11:48pm:
I moved to New York with him for two reasons. The first is that he proposed to
me once he was offered a job at Arthur Andersen and I was afraid to say no,
and the second is because I saw New York as my last and only opportunity for a
fresh start. In Chicago, I didn’t think I could break free the same way. He had so
many friends to keep an eye on me, he knew where to find me, etc.. So I tagged
along.

11:52pm:
Our first week in NYC, I had six interviews, three in one day, two the next and
the last one on Friday. I didn’t make the Friday interview because I was in the
hospital. When I showed up for the second round of interviews the following
week, I never heard back from two of them. I’m sure you can figure out why.

11:55pm:
When I met Melissa, I was still with Peter. It was optics by then, Jake. Of course
we were high school sweethearts. Of course I *loved* him more than anything.
Of course we were planning a huge wedding on Long Island, my dream wedding
that was *fit for a princess.* Of course we were trying to have children. And of
course Melissa saw two people madly in love with each other.

11:57pm:
That’s how these kinds of relationships work – all about what it *looked* like. I
didn’t want to make another trip to the hospital!

11:59pm:
When Andersen promoted Peter to Toronto, I promised him I would follow. Would
you have told him anything different?

12:01am:
I packed all of our stuff and shipped it out with him. Even my stuff because I was
allegedly on the verge of getting transferred myself. It was easier to have it there
waiting for me because then he knew I was serious about making the move,
right? And if he knew I was serious, he would give me the space I needed to find

my next job without telling him anything about it.

12:03am:
I had to take these kinds of steps because if Peter ever returned to NYC to hunt
me down, I couldn’t risk him walking down whatever street I decided to move to
and recognizing an old lampshade or anything else that I might put out for the
trash. Call me paranoid, but would you have taken that chance?

12:05am:
So to address your comment about following him to Toronto, are you smoking
fucking crack? Moving here is not *following him*, it’s either being dragged or
tiptoeing delicately around a sleeping bear.

12:06am:
I love you Jake, I really do, but next time it might make better sense to ask me
directly.
